Why Your Rankings Fluctuate (And When to Worry)
Rankings move. Here is how to tell normal noise from a real problem.

Normal fluctuation
Positions shift daily as search engines test variations and competitors update their pages. Moving between, say, position four and position six over a week is usually noise.
What causes real movement
Algorithm updates. Search engines regularly refine how they rank. Broad shifts across many sites usually point to an update.
Competitor activity. A competitor publishing a stronger page for your keyword is a normal competitive event, not a penalty.
Site changes. Redesigns, new navigation, and changes to page titles can all shift rankings, sometimes temporarily.
Technical problems. Slow load times, broken pages, or accidental "noindex" settings can drop you fast.
How to tell the difference
Look at the pattern, not the position. Is it one keyword or your whole site? Did it happen overnight or drift over weeks? Did it coincide with a change you made?
When to act
Act when the drop is site wide, when it follows a change you made, or when it persists for more than a couple of weeks. Do not panic over a single keyword moving a few spots.
The habit that helps
Track a fixed set of keywords monthly and note anything unusual. Patterns tell you far more than any single day's numbers.
